Sometimes kids (and adults) have strong feelings that can fuel challenging behaviors. Sometimes it’s hard to know how to communicate when you are in an emotional moment. Kimochis are a playful way to help children (and adults!) learn how to identify and express feelings. When kids can communicate their feelings effectively, they develop positive social skills that lead to lasting friendships and success in all aspects of life. Kimochis teach the fourth “R”—reading, writing, arithmetic, and RELATIONSHIPS. This “R” is the foundation for success in ALL areas of life."

We love using children's literature as an integral part of our Peaceful People lessons, though these books can also be used on their own - as a quick classroom activity, by parents at home with their children, or in other settings.

"Peace educator and former USIP Visiting Scholar Maya Soetoro-Ng compiled a list of her favorite books that help young people address issues such as bullying and conflict and build their understanding of concepts such as empowerment, empathy, and forgiveness. Soetoro-Ng is the Director of Community Outreach and Global Learning for the Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, and the co-founder of peace education program Ceeds of Peace.

I was dreaming to write that book - andso delighted that someone did! And they did a great job!
This French book teaches great community and eco-friendly values through a South American legend. It comes with a CD so your little ones in French Immersion can follow, and very awesome cheerful songs by Zaz, one of my favorite French Artist at the time. MUST!

"Nokum Is My Teacher is the poetic story of a young aboriginal boy, posing questions to his grandmother, his "Nokum", about the wider world beyond the familiarity of their home and community. Through a series of questions, Nokum guides her grandson towards an understanding of his need to fit into and learn more about this large world beyond the reserve. Nokum offers her grandson a vision of a world he can enter through imagination and reading, while retaining respect for the ways of his people. By the conclusion of the book, the young grandson has learned many new ideas from his grandmother and discovered his own wisdom in dealing with the changes in his life.
Nokum Is My Teacher is a delightfully packaged book and audio CD, combining the written text in English and Cree with the mesmerizing voice of author/storyteller extraordinaire David Bouchard. It is illustrated by the hauntingly beautiful artworks of Allan Sapp, Cree elder, Governor General's Award-winner, and Officer of the Order of Canada. The singing and drumming are done by Alberta's Northern Cree, who have been nominated for a Grammy Award (2007) in the 'Native American music album' category."
